A Beginner's Guide to Gardening

The rewards of gardening are great -- fresh air, exercise, beauty and relaxation, to name a few. But designing and planting your very first garden can feel like an overwhelming task. Luckily, gardens are surprisingly forgiving creations, and the best way to learn is by simply diving in. Here are 10 tips to help get a new garden off on the right foot.

1. Get to know your site. Take your time to get familiar with your property before beginning a new garden. Here are a few things you may like to try while you're getting to know your landscape:

Take a leisurely stroll around your property with a notebook and make a rough sketch of the existing planting areas.

Add notes to your garden "map" about which areas get the most sun and which are shaded.

A simple soil test from your local garden center will tell you whether your soil is well-balanced in nutrients and pH.

If you're thinking of growing edibles (vegetables, fruit or herbs), it's a good idea to h ave your soil tested for lead. Most at-home kits aren't reliable indicators of lead in the soil, but you can send your soil samples to the Lead Safe America Foundation for a free lead test. If you find that your soil has an unsafe level of lead, you can still grow edibles in raised beds or pots with new https://www.lowes.com/pd/Spectracide-Weed-Stop-for-Lawns-32-fl-oz-Weed-Killer-Plus-Crabgrass-Control/4736729 soil.

List which existing plants and features (such as fences or paths) you'd like to keep and which need to be replaced or removed.

Spend time just hanging out in your garden. Let yourself daydream and see if any creative ideas present themselves.

2. Determine your style and goals. Gather a few images that inspire you and look for a theme. Are you drawn to lus h flower-filled gardens or more crisply defined modern outdoor spaces? It helps to pair a few words with the pictures you've chosen, so try to come up with something that evokes the sort of garden you want, even if it's not an "official" style term.

For instance, maybe you'll decide your style is Industrial Zen or Playful Modern or Simplified Cottage. While you're figuring this out, it helps to keep a photo of the exterior of your home at hand -- whatever style you choose should be able to work well with the architectural style of your home as well as your personal preferences.

Once you've named your style, take a moment to jot down the activities and features you imagine enjoying in your landscape. If you have children, you may need a lot of open space for running around. Or perhaps you dream of relaxing in the middle of a big wildflower meadow -- whatever it is, write it down.

3. Start small. Dreaming is wonderful, but when it comes time to begin digging in th e earth, it's equally important to stay grounded in reality. The bigger the garden, the more time and energy it will require to maintain. Examine what you want (say, a vegetable garden) and then scale it down (for example, plant one raised bed rather than six). You can always expand next year!

This holds true for purchasing plants too: It's easy to get seduced by the bountiful plants at the nursery and come home with far too many. Remember, planting takes time, so buy only what you can comfortably get into the ground within the next day or two.

4. Make a plan. Even if you're planting only a single raised vegetable bed or cluster of potted flowers on the patio, having a plan is key. If you're not sure which plants to buy, take a "research" trip to a local nursery (without buying anything!) and snap photos of plants you'd like to consider adding to your garden. Look at the tags and note down when they bloom, as well as sun and water requirements.

Pulling this info rmation together into a sketched-out plan (no artistic skills required) takes extra time initially but will make for a more successful garden in the end. Choose plants that bloom in different seasons for year-round color, and be sure to pick plants with similar sun and water requirements to plant together.

5. Pick the right tools for the job (without going overboard). Having the proper tools makes garden chores more pleasant -- but don't think you need to buy out the store on day one. Just a few tools and supplies should keep your garden running smoothly. The basics include:

Gardening gloves. Choose a pair that feels comfortable and protects against thorns.

Shovel. This is essential for preparing sizable garden beds and for digging holes for trees, shrubs and large plants. A shovel with a pointed tip is more versatile than a flat spade.

Trowel and weeding tool (or a Japanese gardener's knife). Use these tools to dig holes for planting and pull weeds out at the root.

Long garden hose and spray nozzle. Select a hose long enough to comfortably reach each of the main areas of your garden.

Hand pruner. Sharp clippers can trim branches and cut back woody plants like rosemary.

Metal rake. Use this to spread mulch and prepare beds for planting.

Leaf rake. Use a flexible plastic or bamboo rake to gather leaves.

RELATED: 5 Tools Every Gardener Should Own

6. Mix up perennials and annuals. A common newbie mistake is to grab too many plants from the "annuals" section at the nu rsery, making for a garden that dies back within a single year. For longevity and color, go for a mix of perennials (plants that come back year after year) and annuals (plants that bloom and die within a single season).

7. Repeat, repeat, repeat. One great way to give your garden a professionally designed look (with little effort) is to repeat the same plants and hardscaping materials in different places throughout the landscape. Avoid picking one plant of each type, as this tends to appear jumbled -- even in a wild English cottage-style garden, plants look best when repeated or Sprinkler System Fort Worth planted in clusters. The same goes for other materials: Choose just a few hardscaping materials for paths, pots, planters and outdoor furniture, and repeat, repeat, repeat.

RELATED: Incorporate Outdoor Rocking Chairs

8. Combine seeds and starts for an affordable mix. Starting an entire garden from seed can save money, but it can also be incredibly frustrating. Purchasing only started Sprinkler System Installation Fort Worth plants is not only expensive, but it also may limit your choice of what to grow. The best option is usually a combination of the two: Pick up some started seedlings at your local nursery and start some of your own from seed. Good plants to start from seed yourself include lettuce, radishes, beans, sunflowers, marigolds, cosmos and zinnias.

9. Grow what you like. This sounds utterly simple, but it's something even the most experienced gardeners sometimes seem to forget. Why grow squash if it's not really your favorite? Over the years, we've stopped bothering to grow beans and zucchini, instead devoting extra garden space to family favorites like snap peas, radishes, Tuscan kale and mini pumpkins for Halloween.

10. Further your garden education. Seeking out local workshops is a wonderful way to learn more about gardening and connect with other gardeners in your community. Check plant nurseries, community gardens and botanical gardens in your area for free or low-cost workshops on a wide range of topics like container gardening, using native plants, attracting pollinators, creating a waterwise garden and composting.

Gardening is a lifelong learning experience, and even the most seasoned gardeners are learning all the time -- so don't beat yourself up if it seems that there's too much to know. Just begin somewhere and take it one season at a time. The wonderful thing about gardening is that there's usually room for do-overs.

Organic gardens take root in Canada| Reuters

By Julie Gordon

| TORONTO

TORONTO As climate change makes longer, drier summers a reality in many parts of the world, a new trend in landscaping is taking root in Canada.

In Toronto, where precipitation levels were 52 percent below the seasonal average over the past six months, according to government data, residents are trading in their manicured lawns for environmentally friendly organic landscapes.

"Irrigation is a huge issue as water is such a valuable resource," said Claire Suo-Cockerton of landscaping company Aesthetic Earthworks. "We are trying to plant material that is more appropriate today in our climate."

Organic landscapers use drought resistant plants and shrubs native to the region, which encourage the development micro-organisms in the soil. This attracts birds and insects to act as natural pest and disease control.

A well-managed organic landscape is Sprinkler System Insta llation Rockwall self-sustaining, whereas a traditional yard needs to be watered at least once per week, Suo-Cockerton said.

"It's a drastic lifestyle change for those who incorporate it in their homes," she added.

But the change may be a bit too drastic for average homeowner.

Kevin MacDonald, operations manager of Humber Nurseries near Toronto, said he hasn't seen an increase in the sale of native plants and shrubs. He said the downside to native plants is they are more susceptible to native insects.

"By planting a cultivated variety, that is non-native, you may not end up with https://www.orbitonline.com/ diseases and insect problems, simply because the diseases and insects that would traditionally attack that plant are not found in the new location," he said.

Still, the main reason why traditional gardens remain popular may be purely aesthetic.

"In most cases homeowners will have a preference for what looks best," MacDonald said.

While the bare shrubs and woodchips of an organic landscape don't quite have the curb appeal of an ornamental garden, commercial and residential buildings looking to go green are picking up on the trend.

"From a developer's standpoint it's a great marketing tool because people are becoming very conscious Sprinkler System Rockwall of the environment," said Mel issa Ferrato of the Canada Green Building Council (CGBG).

The CGBG uses the leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED) standard developed in the United States to measure the "green factor" of a building. Avoiding pesticides, lawnmowers and leafblowers all reduce a building's carbon footprint, contributing to a higher LEED score.

"Native, organic plants is what we're all about," said Ferrato. "We really discourage the use of manicured lawns and pesticides."

While organic landscaping is only now gaining popularity in the private sector, it has long been used by city parks departments.

"We've been moving away from traditional lawns for many years now," said Patricia Landry a liaison officer at the Toronto parks department. "We are using plants able to withstand drought, pollution and the changing climate."

Organic landscaping makes economic sense for urban municipalities, Landry said. Less money is spent on labor and irrigation. And reintrod ucing native plants provides habitat for birds and small animals.

While efforts to convert Toronto's ornamental flowerbeds to organic gardens were met with public opposition, some of the cultivated annuals were swapped with native plants.

"It's about trying to keep a balance," said Landry. "Finding different ways to keep those areas a little more environmentally friendly."

Gardening show sprouts from Eugene studio.

Byline: Bob Keefer The Register-Guard

On a brisk fall evening last month, Asha Blake stood in what

appeared to be a lush backyard garden in Eugene under an intensely blue,

artificial sky. With four cameras rolling, Joe Giansante had just

flubbed a line, and Blake was good-naturedly trying to nudge him back on

track.

"You've not tried pear brandy?" the television star

teased.

"I have tried pear brandy," Giansante picked up.

"And I guess it's an acquired taste. ...'

"We got a winner," said a disembodied, electronic voice

hovering in the Sprinkler System Arlington studio. "Great, you guys."

Blake, perhaps best known from her roles on "Good Morning

America," "World News This Mor ning" and "World News

Tonight," was in Eugene for a week recently to help finish taping

segments for a new gardening program being produced at Chambers

Communications for national airing next year.

"Smart Gardening," as the show will be called, is a

half-hour, magazine-style program about "the joy and beauty of

gardening," as its press packet describes it.

The show has been accepted by American Public Television for

distribution to National Public Broadcasting member stations around the

country, its producers say, and should be on Oregon Public Broadcasting in March. Twenty-six episodes are being produced for the first season.

To add to the visual impact, "Smart Gardening" has been

produced in high definition television. It will be the only gardening

show available in the new television format, which is much clearer and

more detailed than the conventional TV signal. HDTV requires a new - and

more expensive - TV set to view, though the show http://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/landscape/ will also be broadcast

on conventional TV.

If the set constructed on a sound stage at Chambers is any

indication, "Smart Gardening" will be beautiful indeed.

With a vaguely Italian ambiance, the indoor set stretches from the

fake front of a stucco house, through a courtyard with stone pavers and

green grass, to a gr eenhouse. Some 400 live potted plants and trees,

carefully arranged to look as though they're growing in place,

provide splashes of bright orange and green.

Add Blake's exotic charm, and the show may be eye-popping

indeed.

"We think it's appropriate that it's being produced

here," says Dawn Ford, senior producer of the show, who's been

working for five years to bring it to fruition. "The Northwest is

the center of the gardening boom in this country, although we hope not

to have the show too geographically centered in Oregon."

Individual segments for the shows have been Sprinkler System taped in Northwest

gardens and farms, but also as far away as New England.

"Smart Gardening" has taken about eight years to bring to

production, Ford said. She is the former producer of the regional

gardening series "Northwest Gardening." She also has worked

for "All Things Considered" and Lucasfilm LTD.

Horticultural accuracy is being provided by former Oregon State

University professor Ann Marie VanDerZanden. Larry Pribyl, co-director

of the OSU Communication Media Center, is associate producer.

How to prepare your lawn for spring

When the winter season ends, you will probably want to Sprinkler System Installation Greenville spend more time outside, appreciating the warm weather and the simple pleasures of a nicely kept lawn. Here are a few steps you can take toward creating and maintaining a healthy and gorgeous lawn.

Remove debris

Rake away the debris from the fall and winter months, including leaves and sticks. This will give you a fresh start for the spring. If you have leftover rubbish on the lawn, this can get in the way of mowing, watering, planting seed and so on. Raking has the added benefit of loosening the surface of the soil, encouraging healthy airflow.

Chris Lemcke, national technical director of Weed Man (a lawn care company), advises raking up last year's leaves and matted grass that were hiding under last fall's leaves and sticks left in the yard. This can keep the thatch level at half an inch or less. It will also allow you to care for the lawn properly.

Apply more grass seed

Look for areas with weak grass growth or dead grass. Use a strong rake to open the surface. Mix the grass seed with new, healthy soil. Then spread this soil/grass seed mixture over the surface. Don't forget to regularly water this area to foster hearty and fast grass growth.

Mulch

Mulch is a protective covering that you can apply to soil to lock in moisture. "Mulching with a depth of 2 to 4 inches around the bases of trees, shrubs and in flower beds will retain water and keep plants warm," says Lemcke.

Water deeply

Many homeowners water their lawns often -- but with little water. However, it's better to water only when your lawn needs it with a lot of water.

If you water deep and sparingly, you will train the grass roots to dig deeper into the soil. Whereas, if you water lightly and often, you will train the roots to stay near the surface, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Snow mold

Look for snow mold. This condition is caused when the grass doesn't receive enough oxygen because it's been covered in snow. Snow mold reveals itself when the snow melts.

If you rake your lawn before the arrival of snow, this can reduce your risk of snow-mold. Some people, with a history of snow mold, try to avoid this condition by mowing the lawn well into the autumn and spreading snow evenly across the lawn during winter. The latter, however, is deemed excessive by many people.

Mow high

Mow your lawn with a sharp blade. You should also mow often because grass doesn't adjust as well to infrequent mowing. If you keep your grass a bit on the longer side, it will grow thicker and healthier, with a better-established root system.

Better roots help your grass survive insects or drought. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, many turf grass species should be kept between 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches.

Former White House press officer Boris Epshteyn to be questioned in Russia probe

The Congressional investigation of Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election continues to grow, as yet another Trump associate, Boris Epshteyn, has acknowledged that he has received https://www.paintersrestaurant.com/ a request for information from lawmakers.

Epshteyn, a Trump campaign adviser who briefly served in the White House communications office, confirmed to ABC News that he has received a request for information and testimony from the House Intelligence Committee. His lawyer provided a brief statement to ABC News.

"Like many others, Mr. Epshteyn has received a broad, preliminary request for information from the House Intelligence Committee. This is a voluntary request. Mr. Epshteyn has not been subpoenaed nor do we anticipate that he will be. We have reached out to the Committee wth several follow up questions and we are awaiting their response in order to better understand what inf ormation they are seeking and whether Mr. Epshteyn is able to reasonably provide it."

The Trump associate, 34, most recently served as the special assistant to the president in charge of surrogate operations before leaving his post in March.

The White House offered no explanation for his abrupt departure. Although a senior Trump administration official initially told ABC News that they were "exploring opportunities within the administration" for Epshteyn, he has since joined the conservative-leaning Sinclair Broadcasting as a political analyst.

Epshteyn grew up in Moscow and met Trump's son Eric at Georgetown University, where he received his law degree. Following the campaign, he served as senior adviser to the Trump-Pence transition team and director of communications for the Presidential Inaugural Committee before joining the White House press office.

A frequent on-air guest during the campaign, he became well-known for combative televi sion appearances and friction with reporters behind the scenes.

In a recent interview with Bill Maher, Epshteyn sparred with the progressive political commentator about whether Russia meddled in the election.

"You would have to ask Russia if they tried to meddle ... Whether there was an attempt at meddling, again, how would I know?" Epshteyn said. "Again, if you have a problem with how the president is handling his foreign policy, you can speak at the ballot box in three and a half years."

Epshteyn appears to be the sixth Trump associate whose activities are being examined in the rapidly widening Congressional investigation.

Gen. Michael Flynn, who served briefly as Trump's National Security Adviser, is the only person of interest to receive a subpoena for records. Flynn has declined to provide them, citing his Fifth Amendment rights.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, informal advisor Roger Stone, and former foreign policy adviser Carter Page have also been asked by lawmakers to voluntarily hand over relevant records. All three have said that they are cooperating with the investigation.

ABC News reported on Tuesday that Michael Cohen, Trump's personal attorney, has also been asked "to provide information and testimony" about his contacts with Russian officials. Cohen told ABC News he "declined to participate" because "the request was poorly phrased, overly broad and not capable of bei ng answered," but denied that he has any links to Russia.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, could also be asked to testify. In an interview with ABC News' Martha Raddatz, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the House Intelligence Committee's top Democrat, has called for a review of Kushner's security clearance following reports that he sought to establish a "backchannel" with Russian officials.

ABC News' Katherine Faulders, David Caplan, Nicki Rossoll and Erin Galloway contributed to this report.
