In Toronto, where precipitation levels were 52 percent below the seasonal average over the past six months, according to government data, residents are trading in their manicured lawns for environmentally friendly organic landscapes.
"Irrigation is a huge issue as water is such a valuable resource," said Claire Suo-Cockerton of landscaping company Aesthetic Earthworks. "We are trying to plant material that is more appropriate today in our climate."
Organic landscapers use drought resistant plants and shrubs native to the region, which encourage the development micro-organisms in the soil. This attracts birds and insects to act as natural pest and disease control.

"It's a drastic lifestyle change for those who incorporate it in their homes," she added.

Still, the main reason why traditional gardens remain popular may be purely aesthetic.

"We've been moving away from traditional lawns for many years now," said Patricia Landry a liaison officer at the Toronto parks department. "We are using plants able to withstand drought, pollution and the changing climate."
Organic landscaping makes economic sense for urban municipalities, Landry said. Less money is spent on labor and irrigation. And reintrod ucing native plants provides habitat for birds and small animals.
While efforts to convert Toronto's ornamental flowerbeds to organic gardens were met with public opposition, some of the cultivated annuals were swapped with native plants.
"It's about trying to keep a balance," said Landry. "Finding different ways to keep those areas a little more environmentally friendly."

The Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) has announced a string of measures Electrician Service designed to revolutionise Britain's energy market and deliver annual savings of over 300 to millions of households across the country.
Savings of this magnitude are available straight away to customers who switch to one of the cheaper fixed rate tariffs on the market.
The CMA says seven out of 10 households remain on standard variable tariffs (SVTs) supplied by British Gas, EDF, Eon, Npower, Scottish Power or SSE - the so-called 'Big Six' suppliers.
It wants to see much more competition between the Big Six and the rising band of independent supp liers who are entering the market. It believes this would reduce the 1.7 billion a year customers are overpaying for energy because competition isn't fierce enough.
Switch and save
The CMA says switching tariff is a well-established way to secure big savings: "There are already plenty of competitive deals out there. What we need to do is persuade customers to take them up."
The watchdog believes price comparison websites, such as MoneySuperMarket, have a vital role to play in boosting competition. It says they should be able to negotiate exclusive deals with suppliers and contact customers with special offers.
The CMA also wants a broader spread of offers on the market to increase choice and flexibility.
Its provisional decision on remedies for the energy market are open for response, with a further report due in the summer.
Stephen Murray, MoneySuperMarket's energy expert, said: "While we wait for the measures to be determined and implement ed, it is worth restating that savings running into hundreds of pounds a year are available NOW to those who switch from a standard rate to a competitive fixed rate tariff."

The Congressional investigation of Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election continues to grow, as yet another Trump associate, Boris Epshteyn, has acknowledged that he has received https://www.paintersrestaurant.com/ a request for information from lawmakers.
Epshteyn, a Trump campaign adviser who briefly served in the White House communications office, confirmed to ABC News that he has received a request for information and testimony from the House Intelligence Committee. His lawyer provided a brief statement to ABC News.
"Like many others, Mr. Epshteyn has received a broad, preliminary request for information from the House Intelligence Committee. This is a voluntary request. Mr. Epshteyn has not been subpoenaed nor do we anticipate that he will be. We have reached out to the Committee wth several follow up questions and we are awaiting their response in order to better understand what inf ormation they are seeking and whether Mr. Epshteyn is able to reasonably provide it."
The Trump associate, 34, most recently served as the special assistant to the president in charge of surrogate operations before leaving his post in March.
The White House offered no explanation for his abrupt departure. Although a senior Trump administration official initially told ABC News that they were "exploring opportunities within the administration" for Epshteyn, he has since joined the conservative-leaning Sinclair Broadcasting as a political analyst.
Epshteyn grew up in Moscow and met Trump's son Eric at Georgetown University, where he received his law degree. Following the campaign, he served as senior adviser to the Trump-Pence transition team and director of communications for the Presidential Inaugural Committee before joining the White House press office.
A frequent on-air guest during the campaign, he became well-known for combative televi sion appearances and friction with reporters behind the scenes.
In a recent interview with Bill Maher, Epshteyn sparred with the progressive political commentator about whether Russia meddled in the election.
"You would have to ask Russia if they tried to meddle ... Whether there was an attempt at meddling, again, how would I know?" Epshteyn said. "Again, if you have a problem with how the president is handling his foreign policy, you can speak at the ballot box in three and a half years."
Epshteyn appears to be the sixth Trump associate whose activities are being examined in the rapidly widening Congressional investigation.
Gen. Michael Flynn, who served briefly as Trump's National Security Adviser, is the only person of interest to receive a subpoena for records. Flynn has declined to provide them, citing his Fifth Amendment rights.
Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, informal advisor Roger Stone, and former foreign policy adviser Carter Page have also been asked by lawmakers to voluntarily hand over relevant records. All three have said that they are cooperating with the investigation.
ABC News reported on Tuesday that Michael Cohen, Trump's personal attorney, has also been asked "to provide information and testimony" about his contacts with Russian officials. Cohen told ABC News he "declined to participate" because "the request was poorly phrased, overly broad and not capable of bei ng answered," but denied that he has any links to Russia.
Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, could also be asked to testify. In an interview with ABC News' Martha Raddatz, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the House Intelligence Committee's top Democrat, has called for a review of Kushner's security clearance following reports that he sought to establish a "backchannel" with Russian officials.
